Wood Characteristics
Grain Patterns and Character
All material will be plain sawn unless otherwise specified. Certain cuts such as quarter sawn and rift sawn are available in select materials. Character marks such as figuring, ambrosia, select tight knots, and rustic grade are also available in select materials. Please call our office at 540-389-8186 for specific requests.
Red Oak
Shall be generally free of knots, kiln check, end checks, and wane (see ordering rules for solid wood moulding). The board’s “good” face may consist of up to 10% sapwood and the opposing face may contain up to 30% sapwood. Mineral streaks or color variation within the heartwood is not considered a defect.
Unselected Soft Maple
Shall be generally free of knots, kiln check, end checks, and wane (see ordering rules for solid wood moulding). Color variation, mineral streaks or ambrosia markings are not considered a defect
White Soft Maple
Shall be generally free of knots, kiln check, end checks, and wane (see ordering rules for solid wood moulding). The board’s “good” face may consist of no more than 10% heartwood. Minor mineral streaks are not considered a defect.
Standard Cherry
Shall be generally free of knots, kiln check, end checks, and wane (see ordering rules for solid wood moulding). These boards will be shipped as 70/30 or better, meaning the boards “good” face may consist of up to 30% sapwood and the opposing surface may contain up to 70% sapwood. Gum is not considered a defect.
Premium Cherry
Shall be generally free of knots, kiln check, end checks, and wane (see ordering rules for solid wood moulding). The boards will be shipped as 95/80, meaning the “good” face will be 95% heartwood and the opposing face may have up to 20% sapwood. Gum is not considered a defect.
Standard Walnut
Shall be generally free of kiln check, end checks, and wane (see ordering rules for solid wood moulding). These boards will be shipped as 70/30 or better, meaning the boards “good” face may consist of up to 30% sapwood and the opposing surface may contain up to 70% sapwood. Solid knots ½” or less will not be considered as defects.
Premium Walnut
Shall be generally free of knots, kiln check, end checks, and wane (see ordering rules for solid wood moulding). The boards will be shipped as 95/80, meaning the “good” face will be 95% heartwood and the opposing face may have up to 20% sapwood. Solid knots of ½” or less will not be considered as defects.
Hickory
Shall be generally free of knots, kiln check, end checks, and wane (see ordering rules for solid wood moulding). Boards may consist of deep contrasts of heartwood and sapwood. Solid knots ½” or less will not be considered as defects. White, brown, and calico hickory available upon request.
Paint Grade Poplar
Shall be generally free of knots, kiln check, end checks, and wane (see ordering rules for solid wood moulding). Boards may consist of deep contrasts of heartwood and sapwood. Any size knot may be filled with Bondo as long as it does not affect the integrity of the board.
Stain Grade Poplar
Shall be generally free of knots, kiln check, end checks, and wane (see ordering rules for solid wood moulding). The board’s “good” face may consist of up to 100% light shades of green heartwood. No Bondo may be used to fill knots. Suitable for medium to dark color stains.
Yellow Pine
Shall be generally free of knots, kiln check, end checks, and wane (see ordering rules for solid wood moulding). Sound knots ½” in diameter or smaller will not be considered as defects.
Radiata Pine
Shall be generally free of knots, kiln check, end checks, and wane (see ordering rules for solid wood moulding). Sound knots ½” in diameter or smaller will not be considered as defects.
White Pine
Shall be generally free of knots, kiln check, end checks, and wane (see ordering rules for solid wood moulding). Sound knots ½” in diameter or smaller will not be considered as defects.
White Hard Maple
Shall be generally free of knots, kiln check, end checks, and wane (see ordering rules for solid wood moulding). Sound knots ½” in diameter or smaller will not be considered as defects. The “good” face may consist of no more than 10% heartwood. Mineral streaks will not be treated as a defect.
White Oak

The board’s “good” face may consist of up to 10% sapwood and the opposing face may contain up to 30% sapwood. Mineral streaks or color variation within the heartwood is not considered a defect.
Rustic White Oak
Boards will contain character marks including variation between heartwood and sapwood, knots, kiln checking, and end cracks. All defects are allowed as long as they do not affect the integrity of the board.
